The hiking hotel in Meran between palms and peaks

Active pursuits begin on the doorstep of the Burggräflerhof, our hiking hotel in Meran. From the narrow streets of Obermais, you can head out into the hills and meadows, where the noise of the city slowly fades away. What remains is the scent of fresh grass, the sound of water, and the soft clang of a distant cowbell. Hiking in Meran and the surrounding area means discovering something new every time – yet never feeling lost. The landscape changes its colours with the seasons: bright green in spring, golden in autumn, white in winter.

Hiking holiday near Meran 2000

Meran 2000, a sunny high plateau that boasts a network of hiking trails in summer, is located above the town of the same name. From leisurely walks to extended day hikes, there’s something for everyone here. At around 2,000 metres above sea level, the air is cool and clear. And time and again, you come across Alpine huts serving simple, good food: bread dumplings, Kaiserschmarrn (torn pancake), and refreshing drinks. As you sit and gaze into the distance, you understand why so many return year after year.

The Meran High Mountain Trail

Those who want to reach new heights can follow the approximately 100-kilometre-long Merano High Mountain Trail. It leads you around the Texel Group Nature Park, passing waterfalls, larch forests, mountain lakes, and sweeping views. Some walk it in stages, while others complete the whole route. For many, it is less a hike than an encounter – with the landscape, with themselves, with time.

The Maiser Waalweg trail

This delightful two-hour ramble takes you through the enchanting landscape of the Meran region. You’ll first walk to Schenna, where at the Schennerhof, you take the turnoff towards the Katnau and Leiterweg paths, which pass the Innerleiterhof farm en route to the Maiser Waalweg trail. This begins just above the Ofenbaur Inn. Follow the Maiser Waalweg northwards, cross the Schnuggenbach stream, and continue to the Petaunerhof farm before reaching the Riffianer Weg path, which brings you back to Schenna and Meran.

The Tappeinerweg trail

Merano’s most renowned walking path, the Tappeinerweg, was constructed in 1893 by the Vinschgau physician Franz Tappeiner. Suitable for the whole family, it runs along the slope of the Monte di Merano/Küchelberg. From Gratsch, walk eastwards for approximately 2.5 hours to Meran and the Gilf Gorge, where you’ll reach the summer and winter promenades. Walk along the Passer Promenade to the theatre square in the town centre. Then take the local bus back up to Obermais.

Sissi’s Trail

This pleasant stroll takes you from the centre of Meran through Obermais to the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, a particularly splendid sight in spring and summer. After visiting the picturesque Empress Elisabeth Park, cross the Post Bridge towards the old town and immediately turn right onto the winter promenade. Then cross the Passirio/Passer River at the Steinernen Steg footbridge, and follow the signs through Obermais, past Brunnenplatz square and the Reichenbach manor house, Rubinstein Castle, and Pienzenau Castle, until you reach the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle.

Getting around made easy:

the Südtirol Guest Pass

With the Südtirol Guest Pass, which is included in your stay at our hiking hotel in the Meran region, you can use many cable cars and lifts at a reduced rate. This shortens your journey to the heights – and broadens your horizons.
